Minato Fireworks Festival at Iwakuni Port

 he festival takes place on Marine Day in hope of safe navigation of ships and development of local industries. Highlight of the festival is the spectacular show of fireworks in diameter of 500 meters (by 24 inch shell) and a variety of fireworks including lily melody fireworks and fireworks by 12 inch, 3 inch and 4 inch shells shot up one after another.

Date and time: July 20 (Sat), 18:30-21:00

※Light rain or shine event. Postponed to the following day in case of adverse and gusty weather.

※Traffic is restricted partially for safety precautions.

Place: In front of Port Building at Iwakuni port

Beware of Bears

 The black bears become active in this season. Please be careful when entering a mountain.

What kind of anumal is bear?

○Good nose and ears, runs very fast. Good at climbing and swimming.

○40~50 km wide action range a day.

Do not call them.

○Bears have high learning ability and are attracted to the taste of human food once they get used to it. Don’t leave or bury the leftovers and food waste outdoors.

To avoid the encounter with a bear

○When it’s dim, a bear is addictied to food and may not be aware of the presence of human, so get down form a mountain by dusk.

When you encounter with a bear

○At first, stay calm and judge the situation. If you run suddenly, it will chase after you reflectively.

○When the bear notices you but does not move, look at its eyes, do not show your back, and slowly move away to an invisible position.

○When the bear is far away, move away slowly, or make a noise to let it notice you.

○When the bear comes close to you, drop your belongings one by one to distract its attention, and retreat by setting the obstacles between you and the bear. If the bear keeps coming toward you, hold your hands behind the neck, curl up in a prone positon and wait until it moves away.

○Be careful, if you see a child bear, there is always a mother bear around.

Sky Lanterns in Futashika

Date and time: Aug 11 (Holiday), 14:00 – (sky lanterns starts at about 19:30 -)

Place: Futashika Outdoor Activities Center

Content:

Sky lanterns, Log sawing experience, Street performance Festival, Sporting games, Playing in the water, Kitchen car march

Admission: Free (except sky lanterns: one costs 3,000 yen)

Sign-up period: From July 15 (Holiday), 09:00 – (reservation needed for sky lanterns)

※ When the supplies (100 lanterns) run out, need to wait for cancellation(s).

The 63rd Iwakuni Civic Culture Festival

 Western-style Dance Festival

Date and time: July 15 (Holiday), 14:00 – 16:00

Place: Main hall, Civic Culture Center

Content: The festival showcases typical Western-style dances of Classical ballet, Jazz ballet, and Social dance.
